About the Course

At the end of the course, you will be able to identify different types of waste for recycling and disposal, the types of waste collection vehicle, the appropriate personal protective equipment for management of different types of waste, organise procedures for sorting waste received at the facility, types of abnormalities encountered during waste sorting operation, basic understanding of Environmental Public Health Act (including GWC and GWDF regulations), Environment Protection and Management Act, Hazardous Waste Act and Workplace Safety and Health Act.

What You'll Learn

  • Inspect collected / received waste to identify and handle bulky waste / combustible / flammable / hazardous according to organisation procedures.

  • Transfer the sorted waste to storage area or for compaction or for treatment.

  • Use assigned personal protective equipment to performance waste sorting.

  • Handle co-mingled waste to feed the sorting line.

  • Perform waste sorting in accordance with organisational procedures and guidelines.

  • Replenish consumables used to prepare for the next waste sorting process.

  • Maintain tools, equipment and personal protective equipment in accordance to organisation guidelines.

  • Report to appropriate person if work cannot be carried out.

Assessment / Certificate:

You will receive a Statement of Attainment from SSG upon attainment of a minimum of 75% training attendance and pass the associated assessments.

Minimum Entry Requirements


  • Speak, listen and read English at a proficiency level not lower than Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 3, and manipulate numbers at a level not lower than Workplace Numeracy (WPN) Level 3.

  • Never attended school; pre-primary / kindergarten education; primary education without PSLE / PSPE certification or equivalent.

  • A minimum of two months of work experience in the waste management industry as Senior Sorter (Materials Recovery), Machine Operator (Materials Recovery), Team Lead (Materials Recovery), Supervisor (Materials Recovery) or with the interest to be employed in the industry.
